How the Final Grade Formula Works
Required Score = (Desired − (1 − Weight) × Current) ÷ Weight
Example: If your current grade is 85%, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 25% of your grade: (90 − 0.75 × 85) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25 = 105%. You'd need a perfect score and then some — time to adjust expectations or find extra credit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the grade I need on my final?
You need three numbers: your current grade in the class, the grade you want to finish with, and how much the final exam is worth (its weight as a percentage). Our calculator uses the formula: Required Score = (Desired Grade - (1 - Final Weight) × Current Grade) ÷ Final Weight.
What if the calculator says I need over 100%?
If the required score is above 100%, it means reaching your desired grade may not be possible with the final exam alone. You might consider adjusting your target grade or checking if there are extra credit opportunities.
How do I find my final exam weight?
Check your course syllabus — it will list how much the final exam counts toward your overall grade. Common weights are 15%, 20%, 25%, or 30%. If you can't find it, ask your instructor.
Does this work for midterms too?
Yes. You can use this calculator for any exam that has a set weight in your overall grade. Just enter your current grade, the grade you want, and the weight of that particular exam.
