How College GPA Is Calculated
College GPA uses the 4.0 scale where A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, and F=0.0. Most colleges use plus/minus modifiers (A-=3.7, B+=3.3, etc.) though some do not.
Each course's quality points equal grade points × credit hours. Your GPA is the total quality points divided by total credit hours attempted.
Tips for College Students
- Check if your college uses +/- grades — some round A- to 4.0.
- Pass/Fail or S/U courses typically don't count toward GPA.
- Transfer credits may not be included in your institutional GPA.
- Repeated courses may have the original grade excluded (grade replacement).
