Understanding Repeat/Retake Policies

How repeats are handled depends on your school and the application service:

Grade Replacement (Most Common)

The old grade is excluded and only the new grade counts toward your GPA. This is the default at most US colleges. Some schools only replace if the new grade is higher.

Count All Attempts (LSAC)

Law schools via LSAC count every attempt — both the old and new grade factor in. Retaking still helps, but less dramatically than under replacement.

AMCAS (Medical School)

AMCAS also counts all attempts. Additionally, AMCAS treats A+ = A = 4.0 (no 4.33 for A+).
