Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Choose your grading scale from the dropdown at the top. The Standard 4.0 scale is the most common in the US.

  3. Select course levels if applicable — AP, IB, or Honors courses receive additional weight on weighted scales.
  4. View your GPA in the summary panel on the right. Click "Show Steps" to see exactly how each course contributes.
  5. Try what-if scenarios to see how changing grades would affect your GPA, without modifying your actual data.

Understanding GPA Calculation

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credits. Quality points for each class equal the grade points multiplied by the credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12.0 quality points.

On a weighted scale, advanced courses receive additional points — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB classes. This means an A in an AP course could be worth 5.0 points instead of 4.0.

Tips for Accuracy

  • Your school may calculate GPA differently. Always verify with your registrar.
  • Some schools round each class grade before averaging; others round only the final GPA.
  • Pass/Fail courses are typically excluded from GPA calculations.
  • Use the "Custom Scale" option if your school uses a non-standard grading system.
