How Is High School GPA Calculated?
High school GPA is computed by assigning point values to letter grades, multiplying by course credits, and dividing the total quality points by total credits. Schools typically report both weighted and unweighted GPAs.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale where an A = 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for more challenging courses: Honors (+0.5), AP (+1.0), and IB (+1.0), up to a 5.0 scale.

What GPA Do Colleges Look For?
Most selective colleges expect a 3.5+ unweighted GPA or a 4.0+ weighted GPA, but they also recalculate GPA using their own formulas. Course rigor matters as much as the final number.
Does Senior Year Count?
Yes — colleges see your mid-year senior grades on applications and your final transcript upon acceptance. A significant GPA drop can jeopardize admission.
