How Are Grades Calculated From Categories?
Most courses divide your grade into weighted categories — homework, quizzes, midterms, finals, participation, etc. Each category has a weight (percentage of total) and your average score within that category.
Your overall grade = Σ(category average × category weight). For example:
- Homework (20%): Average 95 → contributes 19.0 points
- Quizzes (15%): Average 88 → contributes 13.2 points
- Midterm (25%): Score 82 → contributes 20.5 points
- Final (40%): Score 78 → contributes 31.2 points
- Overall: 83.9%
