How Letter Grades Convert to GPA

In the US 4.0 system, each letter grade maps to a set number of grade points. The standard mapping (used by most colleges) treats A and A+ identically at 4.0, with minus grades losing 0.3 and plus grades gaining 0.3.

A+ = 4.0 vs A+ = 4.33

Some schools award A+ = 4.33 to distinguish exceptional performance. AMCAS (medical school applications) always uses A+ = A = 4.0. Learn more about AMCAS rules →

Weighted GPA Scale

Weighted GPAs add bonus points for course difficulty: typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB. An A in AP Chemistry = 5.0 on a weighted scale. Weighted vs unweighted guide →
